Calcite "Boxwork"
The specimen shown here represents a projection of a calcite-vein network which occurs on the walls and ceiling of
Wind Cave, Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota.
A system of minor calcite veins is widely distributed throughout the native limestone in which wind cave was developed.
During cave-making, water dissolved the limestone in preference to vein calcite and left the delicate empty honeycomb
structure in relief.
Overturned Fold In Limestone
More of the pressure which folded the rock came from one side than from the other. The crest has been forced past a
central position so that the beds on one side are actually overturned.
Faults In Sandstone Showing Drag
Drag is the term used to describe the minor folding of beds near the walls of a fault. The block that has moved upwards relatively may show a down turned drag of the beds near the fault, whereas the block whose relative motion was down may show an upturned drag.
The large specimen on the left shows drag accompanying reverse faults and the specimen on the right shows drag induced by normal faults.
Malachite was one of the minerals mined in Bisbee, Arizona. There they called it Kryptonite.
I like the look of this stone.
